The main theme is "Be er city, be er life," and the venue will cover more than 320 hectares in the heart of Shanghai. The Finnish pavilion will be designed by the firm JKMM comprised of architects Asmo Jaaksi, Teemu Kurkela, Samuli Mie inen and Juha Mäki-Jyllilä. Called "Kirnu", which means "churn" in Finnish, the round building will feature a minimalist yet futuristic design. Quite fitting given the goals of Finnish participation in the expo: enhancing Sino-Finnish co-operation between research and science, education, arts and culture, and promoting Finland as a creative and innovative hub. h p://en.expo2010china.com INTELLIGENT DRUG DELIVERY One of the world's most prestigious awards is the Millennium Technology Prize, which has been awarded to Professor Robert Langer for his invention of innovative biomaterials for controlled drug release and tissue regeneration that have saved human lives and improved the lives of millions of patients. Professor Langer's innovations have had a significant impact on fighting cancer, heart disease and numerous other diseases. More than 100 million people a year are already using advanced drug delivery. The 1 million Millennium Technology Prize is administered in Finland and awarded internationally every two years. Its goal is to inspire and recognise technological innovations that provide answers to the challenges of our time and improve quality of life. Previous winners include Shuji Nakamura for his invention of a revolutionary source of light that can be used for life-saving applications and Tim Berners-Lee, who is credited with revolutionising electronic communications with the invention of the World Wide Web. www.millenniumprize.fi THE POPULARITY OF DOCUMENTARY Every January, the largest documentary film festival in the Nordic countries takes place in Helsinki. The annual DocPoint festival offers a national and international selection of the best new movies, celebrated classics and a special selection of documentary films for children. www.docpoint.info LEHTIKUVA MATTI BJÖRKMAN A STAR IS BORN Paralympic athlete Leo-Pekka Tähti (his surname means "star" in Finnish) won the gold medal in the 100-metre wheelchair race with a time of 13.81 seconds at the Beijing 2008 Paralympic Games. Tähti also won a bronze medal in the 200-metre wheelchair race. Tähti holds the world record (13.59 seconds) for the 100-metre wheelchair race, which he set in May 2008.
