NEWS/UPDATES COMPILED BY KATJA PANTZAR LEHTIKUVA/MARTTI KAINULAINEN Former Finnish President Mar i Ahtisaari receives the 2008 Nobel Peace Prize. WINNING FINNISH A collective cheer was heard all around Finland on the day the 2008 Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to former Finnish President Mar i Ahtisaari for his decades-long career of peacemaking around the world. Ahtisaari, 71, has worked as a senior public servant, president (1994 2000), and in numerous international capacities, many of which have been connected to the United Nations. During the past 20 years, he has played a prominent role in efforts to resolve serious and long-lasting conflicts. From 1989 to 1990, he played a significant part in the establishment of Namibia's independence; in 2005 his organisation Crisis Management Initiative (CMI) was central to the solution of the complicated Aceh question in Indonesia. In 1999 and again in 2005 through 2007, he sought to find a solution to the conflict in Kosovo. In 2008, with the CMI and in co-operation with other institutions, Ahtisaari has endeavoured to find a peaceful conclusion to the problems in Iraq. The Norwegian Nobel Committee chose Ahtisaari to receive the 1 million prize from a field of 197 candidates for "his important efforts, on several continents and over more than three decades, to resolve international conflicts." www.nobelprize.org www.cmi.fi EXPANDING GATEWAY TO THE EAST KATJA PANTZAR The Finnish national airline Finnair has launched two new routes: one to Seoul, South Korea, and the other to Yekaterinburg, Russia.
