Cornerstone of the lifestyle concept Marimekko, which literally means "Mary's dress," was founded in 1951, by Armi Ratia and launched at Helsinki's then-most fashionable restaurant Kalastajatorppa, was a lifestyle concept before such a concept existed. Ratia marketed Marimekko to the world, and it was a fabulous stroke of good fortune that former first lady Jackie Kennedy fell in love with it. Marimekko was launched in the United States in the 1950s. Kennedy had been criticised for wearing expensive Parisien fashions. When she donned a sensible Marimekko dress on the cover of Sports Illustrated, the syndicated story ran in 300 American newspapers. Following Ratia's death in 1979, Marimekko was later acquired by conglomerate Amer in the mid-1980s. Following years of loss, ad agency director Kirsti Paakkanen took the company over in 1991. During the past ten years, the profitability of Marimekko has improved by 10 to 40 per cent annually. Its designs have appeared in movies such as Sex and the City, based on the eponymous hit TV series that also featured Marimekko products chosen by celebrity stylist Patricia Field. www.marimekko.com Marimekko's President and CEO Mika Ihamuotila brings his successful business acumen to the company.
